All bases covered

The obvious solution is a pickup truck if you’re in the market for a new vehicle in Yellowknife and need it to fulfill various roles. And if you regularly or even occasionally need to tow or haul more than a light-duty truck can handle, a heavy-duty truck is what you need. However, if you want heavy-duty capability along with the style, luxury, comfort, and presence of a prestige sedan or SUV, the 2023 GMC Sierra HD is in a class of its own.

Stylish capability

Heavy-duty trucks are rarely available in as many different trim levels and configurations as their light-duty counterparts, but the 2023 GMC Sierra HD offers plenty of choices without going overboard and becoming confusing. There are five trim levels in the 2023 Sierra HD lineup, which range from the relatively workmanlike to the positively opulent. There are also two versions of the Sierra HD: the 2500 HD and the 3500 HD.

Most retail shoppers will overlook the entry-level Pro version of the Sierra HD as it’s considered a reasonably basic model aimed primarily at fleets. That’s despite the fact that it has a standard specification that’s a long way from what basic used to look like. The level above the Pro is the SLE, and then the range goes to the SLT, AT4, and range-topping Denali.

Great power with great versatility

New 2023 GMC Sierra HD powertrains and performance

The 2023 GMC Sierra HD line of heavy-duty trucks covers a broad range of towing and hauling capacities, but it’s always good to have at least a little more capability than you usually need, just in case. The maximum tow rating for the 2023 Sierra HD is a massive 16,329 kg, and the maximum payload is an equally impressive 3,376 kg. The Pro, SLE, and SLT trim levels of the 2500 HD, and 3500 HD are rear-wheel-drive with four-wheel-drive available, but AT4 and Denali are exclusively four-wheel drive models.

In true heavy-duty truck tradition, there are two engines to choose between. The standard powerplant is a 6.6-litre gas V-8 that develops 401 horsepower and 464 lb.-ft. of torque. The alternative is another 6.6-litre V-8 engine, but this time it’s a Duramax turbodiesel. The diesel develops 445 horsepower and an immense 910 lb.-ft. of torque. Regardless of engine, drivetrain, or trim level, the power gets sent to the wheels through an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.

User-friendly technology

All the features you’d expect to find in upscale sedans and SUVs are standard or available with the 2023 GMC Sierra HD, such as heated and ventilated seats, perforated leather upholstery, a digital dashboard display, an HD rear vision camera, and a top-notch infotainment system. However, plenty of features are available that are designed to make the day-to-day truck business of towing and hauling as easy as possible.

World-first and industry-first features such as Transparent Trailer View and the Multipro Tailgate make it easy for even relative novices to tow a trailer and load/unload the truck bed. And everything is easier when high-tech features like a head-up display and a rear camera mirror that shows live camera footage of what’s going on behind you for a better view than a traditional mirror.
